Short-Term Rental Restrictions in Buncomb County

The Buncombe County Planning Board is currently reviewing potential changes that could significantly alter the use of properties for Short-Term Rentals (STRs). These proposed amendments focus on:

  • Limiting the allowance of STRs to areas zoned for commercial use.
  • Requiring STRs in other zones to obtain a permit to operate as a legal nonconforming use.
  • Introducing a reduced maximum gross floor area for STR properties.
  • Eliminating the ability to transfer STR rights when selling a property.

These considerations are poised to move through the Planning Board for initial review, followed by potential approval from the Commissioners. A critical Public Hearing is scheduled for March 4th, where community input is crucial. Your participation and feedback to the Buncombe County Planning Board are highly encouraged to express any concerns regarding these proposed regulations.
